An All Star Experience

The 2013 Major League Baseball All Star Game might have been the most boring game I've ever attended. Zero hitting. Minimal run scoring. Even the runs that were scored were on lame sac flies or fielder's choice plays. It was also one of the most amazing sports experiences I've ever seen.

This was my first All Star Game. I've watched every All Start for the last 28 years on television and when the opportunity came to see it first hand in my favorite team's stadium I had to do it. Price gouging aside, this is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Not only was this my first All Star Game, it was the first All Star Game my son has been to. In fact, yesterday was the first baseball game he's ever been to in person. I will now accept my Father of the Year trophy. My son is 8 years old. He's not a huge baseball fan. He knows daddy loves the Mets. He knows David Wright and every so often asks where is Jose Reyes. I got him a Matt Harvey shirt and he thinks Kevin James on the jumbotron is fat, foolish and pretty hilarious. I didn't expect him to appreciate the significance of this game now, but I know he will down the road.

Explaining to my son what the All Star Game exactly is was interesting. He kept asking why aren't there more Mets players playing if it's in their stadium? He's starting to learn the game of baseball and a steady flow of junk food being passed his way helped him endure 9 innings of lackluster play from the game's top players.

But the sentimental father/son moments aside, the All Star Game being at Citi Field for a Mets Lifer was remarkable. Mets fans have lacked a packed house brimming with energy for quite a few years. What was interesting was just how few Yankees fans were in the building. This truly was a night for Mets fans.

The ovation for Wright and Harvey during the starting the lineups was raucous. David Wright may have worked harder the last two days than he will the remainder of the season. The guy did every interview. He was in almost every promo on the scoreboard. He was a PR machine for the Mets and after seeing him do all that I came to realize that it's really hard not to like David Wright. Is there a more clean cut, likeable, quality player in the majors than Wright? I'm not sure there is.

Then you have Harvey. The flashbacks to the hopes and dreams of Doc Gooden come flooding back every time I see Harvey take the mound. When he had 2 outs and 2 strikes in the first inning, the "Harvey! Harvey" chants started up organically as Citi Field just wanted to explode with a strikeout. I can't wait for more of those types of moments in regular season and hopefully postseason games in the future.

And Harvey plunking Cano was a bit entertaining as well.

Even as a Mets fan, I could appreciate the moment that was Mariano Rivera's final All Star Game. How could you not applaud this guy who might be the best pitcher we'll ever see. Rivera standing alone on the mound for a good 3 minutes amongst cheers and revelry was a moment I'll never forget.

So the National League lost and won't have home field advantage in the World Series. And yes the game was ridiculously boring for the most part. It didn't matter. This was an amazing experience, especially for Mets fans. If I liked the Dodgers or the Orioles or even the Reds, I probably would have walked away without that much of an impression. But for Mets fans, the All Star Game might very well have been the beginning of a new chapter. Changes are happening. An inkling of that was felt last night and I can't wait for what's to come.

For David Wright It's June 31st

I lost faith in David Wright. During the offseason after last year's dismal performance I was down on the guy. I thought the Wright we saw in 2006 would never return, but this June my faith has been restored.

David Wright is proving to be the talent we all thought he was before the dark cloud of 2009 rolled in and blurred our vision. In the month of June, Wright has been unstoppable raising his average over .310 and setting a personal best for RBIs in a month while leading the National League in RBIs. and tied for 6th in average.

But today is July 1st. June has been so fantastic for Wright that he should just throw his calendar out. On the one hand this will let us see if the Wright of June is here to stay. On the other a serious drop in production in July could send Wright back into his "2 weeks on/2 weeks off" funk that we've seen over the past two seasons.

This team is much more enjoyable too watch when David Wright is at his best. Not to mention they tend to win a whole lot more games too.

So welcome Mr. Wright to June 31st.

Predictions for the 2009 Mid-Summer Classic

The All Star Game is here (yawn). Let's hope it's not as long or as boring as last night's home run derby. Here are my predictions for this year's all star bash:

  • David Wright will strike out at least once
  • Albert Pujols gets the largest ovation
  • Chase Utley swears on camera...again
  • The phrase "steroids era" is used at least once in the broadcast
  • Tim McCarver will make me want to break my TV
  • Tim McCarver mention catching Bob Gibson
  • Johan Santana will not pitch
  • Ryan Howard hits a home run
  • Mariano Rivera is hailed as the greatest relief pitcher to walk the face of the earth
  • Joe Buck will remark how the Cardinals' fans are the greatest baseball fans on the planet
  • Roy Halladay trade talk will start in the first inning
  • The pre game show will go too long
  • The National League will lose

Hate and Love for the All Star Game

Hate, the long game. Love, the close game. Hate, the teams are made up of many players you'll never hear from again. Love, the pageantry. Hate, the announcers. Love, hearing from the hall of famers. Hate, seeing Billy Wagner blow yet another lead. Love, seeing Billy Wagner not blow one for the Mets. Hate, the funeral dirge music before every commercial break. Love, the fact they didn't use the FOX Sports robot. Hate, having to hear "the final game in Yankee Stadium" every 30 seconds. Love, that I'll never have to hear that again. Hate, Ryan Dempster's delivery. Love, watching Russel Martin play catcher. Hate, the NL losing yet again. Love, that the game required some actual managing. Hate, that A-Rod left the actual stadium early like he had better things to do. Love that guys like Jeter and Wright hung out on the top step with anticipation every inning. Hate, the Naomi Campbell SoBe commercials. Love, The Dark Knight spots. Hate, Dan Uggla's glove (and bat). Love, that the Marlins' All Stars are the worst fielding All Stars ever. Hate, the fact that the NL won't have home field advantage in the World Series. Love, dreaming about the Mets second half chances. Let's get back to some games that really count. See you in Cincinnati.

David Wright is an All Star

Of course as Mets Lifers we already knew that, but MLB finally got its act together and word has it that David Wright will replace Alfonso Soriano on the NL All Star team.
Congrats David Wright. Well deserved.

All Star Game Snooze Fest

Our friends over at Long Island Mets Fan put together a hilarious post about what he expects from the All Star Game.

It's nice to see someone else shares a disdain for the FOX baseball broadcasting team and their fawning over all things Yankee and Cardinals. Without no Wright and no Reyes, I'm not sure I'l watch past the third inning.

Check out their post here.

David Wright Needs Your Vote

This is just sinful. According to MLB.com, Corey Hart is currently beating out David Wright for the last spot on the All Star Team.

Just disgusting.

Mets Lifers we can't let this happen. Not when the All Star Game is in our town. If you hit Corey Hart with a car would you even know who he was? Nope, you'd have no clue. You'd probably keep driving.

David Wright needs your vote as my counterpart Bryan posted earlier this week. Get out there and vote. Vote as many times as you can. It's not that hard. My 3-year old can do it and I'm making him do it on the other computer right now. No Zula Patrol cartoons until he's voted for David Wright 25 times.

Click here to start voting for David Wright, right now! Make the Wright choice for the All Star Game.

Jose Reyes is the Right Shortstop for the All Star Game

Anyone who watched Saturday's FOX game of the week (Yanks vs. Giants) may have heard Thom Brennaman make possibly the most idiotic statement of the year. He was going down the list of NL starters for the All Star game and got to Jose Reyes at shortstop to which he remarked, "Jose Reyes does not deserve to be the starter; that should be J.J. Hardy." He went on to claim that J.J. Hard is the NL MVP this year.

I about lost it. Thankfully, Joe Girardi defended Reyes and said he disagreed with Thom Brennaman and Jose Reyes deserved to start the All Star Game. Still it irks me that Jose Reyes is getting no respect from announcers like Thom Brennaman after putting up staggering numbers through the first half of the season.

But I could be biased as I tend to dislike every announcer on FOX baseball games. That means you Tim McCarver.

Thankfully, Rob Neyer saw this game and defended Jose Reyes publicly in his blog for ESPN.com. Neyer writes:

"One thing that drives me crazy about writers and broadcasters is how they'll get something stuck in their head, and you're not getting it out of there with a titanium sledgehammer. Yes, there was a moment when J.J. Hardy looked like the National League's most valuable player. That moment was approximately May 25, when Hardy was batting .360 and (I believe) led the NL with 15 homers. That was then. Now, he's not anything like the most valuable player. He's not even the most valuable shortstop."

Well said, Mr. Neyer. For Rob Neyer's full post, click here. (ESPN insider)
