Bye Bye Ollie

Oliver Perez stay in the major leagues should be over. He can't pitch up here with any consistency. Forget his contract. Forget the fact that he's still owed a double digit million dollar salary over the next few years. That money is already gone whether he pitches or not.

The Mets should cut their losses, send Ollie down to the minors, and see what happens. Maybe he's the next Rick Ankiel?

If Tobi Stoner was pitching the way Perez has this season, do you think the Mets would continue to keep him with the ball club? No way. Yet for some reason they believe that there's a magic switch that can be flipped to make Ollie good. What they forget is Ollie was good really for only one season. The rest of his career he hasn't been over .500.

Yes, the lineup needs to be adjusted. Sure the bullpen is overworked. But if you want to address the easiset problem the Mets can fix, it's cutting Ollie loose and moving on.

Send Down Oliver Perez?

There was a debate going during last night's broadcast as to whom the Mets should send down once Pedro Martinez returns tonight?

I think Oliver Perez answered the question in last night's first inning.

Perez proved why he was a "throw in" with Roberto Hernandez back in the 2006 Xavier Nady trade. While Perez has had some great stuff last year, he's fallen back into troubled times this year.

I just read this morning that's he given up 43 runs in 60 innings pitched. I like this guy, and I really want him to do well, but I think he needs to see a psychiatrist.

Rick Peterson isn't getting through to him. Maybe he'll become another Rick Ankiel in a few years. I don't know what to do with Perez, but if the Mets sent him down instead to work on some pitches I couldn't blame them.

Our friends at Mets Brotha wrote an excellent post on the amazing Rick Ankiel. I really love this story, especially in the shadows of Bonds' home run record*.

I'm cheering for Ankiel and I want him to be successful. I do like Mets Brotha's comment at the end in reference to Rick Peterson. Good stuff.
