Only the Mets can get an inside the park home run, a triple play and a run in the top of the 9th and still lose the game.

Only the Mets can go from last place to first place to utter unimportance in the span of 10 days.

Only the Mets can invent new ways to lose games like walk-off wild pitches and walk-off throwing errors.

Only the Mets can have a player with solid stats who's on track for 30 homers and 100 RBI look so awful night in and night out.

Only the Mets can pay top dollar for a power hitter with one home run and starting pitcher who's banished to the bullpen.

Only the Mets can build one of baseball's best stadiums and cause me to have no desire to visit it.

Only the Mets can have closed door meetings and have the team play ten times worse the following game.

Only the Mets can ignore the reality of the starting rotation for months on end and live on hope and a prayer.

Only the Mets can make playing the Washington Nationals an unpleasant affair.

Only the Mets can follow up one of the most depressing seasons in recent memory with one even more depressing.

Good News About the Mets Being So Bad

There's always a silver lining, and the Mets being plain painful to watch has a bright side as well.

• For a change, you won't have to suffer through utter and total disappointed on the last day of September for 3 straight years
• The Mets being unwatchable frees up time for you to watch such fantastic summer shows as Wipeout and Big Brother
• You can learn a foreign language before the Mets hit their next home run
• You've never watched a double A baseball team before so now's your chance to see one on SNY...in HD!
• At least we're not the Nationals
• You can for the first time in a long time talk to your wife and children and not be distracted by a baseball game
• Gives you time to reflect back on the good ol' days when we just couldn't beat the Braves instead of not being able to beat anyone
• You suddenly have dreams of Rick Reed making a comeback
• At least K-Rod will be well rested for 2010
• Your Carlos Delgado jersey won't get any stains on it at your next BBQ
• Every 5 days you get to watch the best pitcher in baseball not get any run support
• Only 3 more years of Luis Castillo
• Whining and complaining is always much more fun than winning

A Mets Weekend to Forget?

The bad news? Johan Santana had his worst outing of the season. Possibly worst outing ever.

The good news? It's done. You can expect nothing worse from Santana for another 365 days.

But was this the worst Mets weekend of the season? Possibly, but in actuality all it resulted in was a loss of one game in the standings.

That's it. All the drama, all the pain, all the sufferring and all the Mets ended up with after this dreadful weekend was losing one game in the standings (thank you Boston Red Sox).

The Mets should have taken the first game against the Yanks. The Mets should have won the last two games against the Phillies too. Should, should, should.

But here we are. 4 games back. Playing with starters who wouldn't even start for the Washington Nationals. Ok, maybe they would start for the Nationals.

Is this the ideal position to be in? Absolutely not. Am I pleased this is where we find ourselves? Not a bit. Could it be ten times worse? For sure.

I find I need to remind myself from time to time that we have no Delgado, no Reyes, no Perez, no Putz, and no Maine. This is not half a team, it's a quarter of a team.

The Mets just need to tread water until either a deal is made or we can get some resemblance of our starting roster put back together.

Mets Did Better Than Expected

The Mets returned from a 5-5 road trip to face the Washington Nationals tonight.

The trip started out like a dream sequence, turned into a nightmare, and ended with a somewhat surprising ending. This 10 game road swing was to be a real test of this ball club and it turned out to be just that.

The Mets basically had their "C" team out there for all 10 games and managed to split the road trip and win some impressive games while also losing some winnable affairs.

Without Delgado, without Reyes and without basically any bench the Mets played with some heart in Boston, showed some offensive prowess in San Francisco and showed how weak their weakest link is in LA.

Overall I can't complain. Ramon Martinez is our starting shortstop. Daniel Murphy is playing first base. And Jeremy Reed has all of a sudden become a valuable bat in the lineup. We should have lost 6 or 7 games.

And so now the beloved Nationals come to town. The Mets can't overlook them and should be able to get some additional wins this week to buy some time before some moves can be made and some players can get back on their feet.
