As soon as Gary Cohen announced that Wagner had not given up a run in 20+ appearances I got a sinking feeling in my stomach. He just cursed him.Lo and behold Wagner's days of perfection came to an end when he gave up 2 runs in the top of the ninth that gave the Marlins a win. Florida's Ramirez scorched a double to center that looked like it had a slice to it. Beltran broke to his right only to find that the ball curved back to his left as it approached the fence. It was a tough catch to make and even if Beltran had gotten a jump on it, I'm not sure he would have got it.
It was a disappointing loss on a number of levels. The unknown Bill Lawrence did a solid job pitching and deserved the win. Beltran returned to the lineup and crushed a 3-run homer, his first in what seems like an eternity. And it's tough to take back to back heartbreaking losses.
Wagner has been stellar all year so I keep telling myself it was bound to happen sooner or later. Let's hope the next is one is much later. Like next April.
